TTC Abbreviations For Dummies (An absolute MUST read prior to viewing my blogs!!)

If you’ve spent longer than 3 minutes on any site dedicated to achieving pregnancy, you will have undoubtedly seen many of these acronyms. Especially for newbies to all of this, the TTC world can be a strange and foreign place. And if you get two (or more) veteran TTC-ers chatting together in one place it can seem to onlookers as if they’re speaking a totally different language. In fact, that’s exactly what they’re doing! So I’ve put a few of the most common TTC “terms” together to hopefully shed some light on the “mystery abbreviations.” I know I will inevitably forget some, and I’m sorry; I’ll be updating this section frequently. (I did not put these in Alphabetical Order the way Fertility Friend did; I simply tried to remember the ones that I’ve seen/used most often.)

TTC – Trying To Conceive

POAS – Pee On A Stick

BFP – Big Fat Positive (test result)

BFN – Big Fat Negative (test result)

HPT – Home Pregnancy Test

O – Ovulation

PCOS – Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

NTNP – Not Trying, Not Preventing

AF – Aunt Flo (your period)

BD – Baby Dancing (sex)

TWW/2WW – Two Week Wait (span of time between ovulation and AF/BFP – can be longer or shorter than two weeks, depending on each woman’s cycle)

CM – Cervical Mucus

CP – Cervical Position

BBT – Basal Body Temperature

CL – Coverline (baseline temperature when charting BBT)

CH – Crosshairs (the “x marks the spot” on a BBT chart indicating ovulation)

EWCM – Egg White Cervical Mucus

DPO – Days Past Ovulation

LP – Luteal Phase (aka, TWW)

FP – Follicular Phase (span of time where egg follicles are maturing prior to ovulation)

Follies/Follicles – Egg Follicles prior to ovulation

DH/DS/DD – Dear Husband, Dear Son, Dear Daughter

SO – Significant Other

FSH – Follicle Stimulating Hormone

GnRH – Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone

EDD – Estimated Due Date

HcG – Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hormone released during pregnancy – this is the hormone that HPTs check for to indicate pregnancy)

IUI – Intra Uterine Incemination

IVF – In-Vitro Fertilization

OPK – Ovulation Prediction Kit

LMP – Last Menstrual Period

LH – Luteinizing Hormone

LPD – Luteal Phase Defect

U/S – Ultrasound

M/C – Miscarriage

RE – Reproductive Endocrinologist (fertility specialist above and beyond your regular GYN doctor)

FRER – First Response Early Result (the gold standard of HPTs for most TTC-ers)

MM/C – Missed Miscarriage (sometimes written as MMC)

EPO – Evening Primrose Oil

FF – Fertility Friend

I have included a few more “terms” into this section because I feel that they are extremely relevant, albeit they are most certainly NOT acronyms. Most of these are terms that vexed me for a long time, but I was too self-conscious of feeling like a moron to ask anyone what they meant. So one day I finally pulled my big girl panties on and asked a lady on another site, “I feel like an idiot for not knowing, but I simply can not go another day without asking – what’s ‘_____’ mean?” And she, like most of the women I’ve run into online throughout my TTC journey, was an absolute sweetheart and took pity on my ignorant self and told me! So, to help a fellow TTC-er out, here are a few biggies that you’ll see often.

Rainbow Baby – Baby conceived after loss

Chemical – Very early miscarriage (often before a missed period with BFP being only real “proof” that a pregnancy was achieved)

Evap/Evap Line – Evaporation Line (line that appeared in the “Test” window of a HPT as the test dried and/or after the time limit provided in the test instructions. Peeonastickfreak.com has got some great info regarding evaporation lines – this term has begun to be used incorrectly around the TTC world lately)

Temping/Charting – Charting your BBT

*Forewarning*

I have designed this blog for those who are genuinely interested and/or are actively trying to achieve pregnancy. Information and/or media found within my posts is not intended to replace the advise of a medical professional. There may be pictures/phrases included in my posts that “could” be classified as graphic; this site is not for the terribly squeamish. I will say however that there is not, nor will there ever be any nudity depicted in any of my posts/pages. So in short, if ya can take the heat – then welcome to my kitchen!

This blog is very lovingly dedicated to my good friend Jenny. We conceived within weeks of one another in 2012 but tragically, her pregnancy was cut short while mine continued. She has been on the TTC “Crazy Train” ever since and was diagnosed with “Unexplained Infertility.” She has been a joy and an inspiration to me since the first day we met in Basic  Combat Training at Fort Jackson, SC in 2005. You are a very beautifully strong lady; love you, girl!
